[Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide]
While researching alternative medical remedies for my blog, I stumbled upon The One Minute Cure by Madison Cavanaugh. Like many other alternative medical books, it claims to be a panacea for all diseases. Not only did it boast to be a cure all for many diseases; many of the claims were supported by physicians and over 6,100 peer-reviewed published articles. I decided to research further via the internet and found another book “The Truth about Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide” by James Paul Roguski. This author went a step further by stating hydrogen peroxide should be considered a dietary nutrient. Direct to the point, both authors assert that virtually all disease is due to oxygen deficiency on a cellular level. Therefore, by flooding the blood stream with oxygen, the body is able to heal itself and/or destroy disease causing micro-organisms. Is there substance to this claim?
I’ve heard about oxygen therapy before. Actually, the first thoughts that come to mind are oxygen bars (popular in the 80s), hyperbaric oxygen chambers, and the dreaded oxidation associated with cellular aging & rusting of metals. I’ll touch upon some of these later in this article.
According to the authors, hydrogen peroxide has many health related applications. They offer an extensive list of diseases, bacteria, and fungi treated by food grade hydrogen peroxide. Here is a short list:
• Alzheimer’s Disease
• Chronic Pain
• Diabetes Type II
• Fungal Infections
• Gum Disease
• Herpes (Simplex & Zoster)
• Parasitic Infections
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Viral Infections
Let’s take a closer look at how food grade hydrogen peroxide can treat one of the most dreaded diseases – cancer – along with supporting documentation.
The rational for treating cancer with hydrogen peroxide dates back to the 1930’s with a Dr. Otto Warburg, who was the director of the Max Planck Institute for Cell Physiology in Berlin. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1931 for his discovery of oxygen transferring enzymes vital to cellular respiration. According to Dr. Warburg, the key precondition for the development of cancer is a dysfunction of the cells’ ability to properly process oxygen at a cellular level.
On June 30, 1966, Dr. Otto Warburg presented a lecture entitled: “The Prime Cause and Prevention of Cancer. Here are some excerpts taken from his lecture:
“Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar.”
“All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation.”
“Oxygen gas, the donor of energy in plants and animals is dethroned in the cancer cells and replaced by the fermentation of glucose (sugar).
Dr. Warburg in part was explaining that cancer cells are unable to properly utilize oxygen during cellular respiration in order to completely process sugars. The cells produce lactic acid creating an acidic environment, which may lead to cancer due to damaged mitochondria and DNA.
In many human diseases, we find anaerobic fermentation of sugar in which a relatively small amount of energy (ATP) is extracted from a large amount of sugar. The muscle pain that often results after athletic exertion is caused by large amounts of lactic acid in the muscle tissue. Faced with large demands for energy and insufficient amounts of oxygen to fully oxidize sugar, muscle cells resort to fermentation. This fermentation simply involves “cracking” molecules of sugar in half to produce lactic acid. 
Glucose > 2(lactic Acid)
Very important to note fermentation of sugar does not require oxygen!
C6H12O6 + 6O2 > 2CO2 + 6 H2O
Glucose + 6(Oxygen) > 6(Carbon Dioxide) + 6(Water)
Under normal cellular respiration oxygen is used to completely breakdown sugar to carbon dioxide and water.
There is medical evidence of the use of hydrogen peroxide to treat cancer before the release of Dr. Otto Warburg’s findings. For example in 1928 A. Magat succeeded in treating tumors in mice by using organic peroxides. (A. Magat, Congresse Allemande du Cancer, April 1928, Wiesbaden.). I’ve included more documented research material in treating cancer with hydrogen peroxide in the references section.
How it Works:
There are different methods of delivering a higher than normal level of oxygen to the blood. For the purpose of simplicity I’ve focused on oral consumption of food grade hydrogen peroxide. Please note, FOOD GRADE hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide purchased at the local convenience store is 3% pharmaceutical grade and not recommended for oral consumption. The 3% typically contains stabilizers such as phenol, sodium stagnate, and tetra-sodium phosphate which is not meant for consumption. Therefore, the authors recommend the use of food grade 35% hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide must be diluted for safe consumption as this concentration is caustic and very dangerous!
Over the years in investigating alternative medicine and nutrition, I’ve repeatedly heard the claims that disease causing microorganisms cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment. Normal functioning human cells need oxygen while pathogens thrive in low oxygen environments. Which brings us to hydrogen peroxide. In simplest terms, hydrogen peroxide when dissolved gives up its extra oxygen atom from its molecular configuration, thereby producing an oxygen rich environment.
Healthy cells produce a protective coat of enzymes designed to either activate or neutralize oxygen. Diseased cells, cancerous cells, fungi, viruses, and parasites have difficulties maintaining this protective coat of enzymes, making them vulnerable to oxidation or free radicals.
Hydrogen peroxide is naturally produced by our bodies and is vital to our immune system as well as stimulating important detoxifying enzymes. Hydrogen peroxide is a naturally occurring compound not only found in our bodies but also in specific water sources (e.g. so called healing springs), honey (anti microbial), fruits, and vegetables.
After researching, I decided to give it a try. I was more interested in hydrogen peroxides ability to produce more energy via oxygenation. So, I challenged myself to rebuke caffeine for 2 weeks while administering recommended doses of food grade hydrogen peroxide (diluted). Mild headaches occurred for the first 3 days. (Attributing the headaches to sudden loss of my daily caffeine.) In any event the headaches went away and I noticed a spike in energy and focus. Interestingly, I didn’t crave caffeine while taking the hydrogen peroxide. Also noticed I had less fatigue after my routine workouts at the gym. I don’t believe it’s the placebo effect.
• Always dilute food grade hydrogen peroxide
• Try to consume on an empty stomach
• Avoid using while consuming iron rich foods as the iron will oxidize and rust in the stomach
• Food grade can be produced from pharmaceutical grade without stabilizers – If so, be sure to freeze as only the water will freeze while the peroxide will remain liquid.
